The mission of the G.R.O.W.T.H. (Global Research on Working to Ameliorate Health Disparities) Research Lab is to conduct research on racial microaggressions and their influence on mental health, health behaviors, and career development in disadvantaged emerging adult populations (e.g., first generation college students, Black, Indigenous and People of Color, women). We seek to develop interventions to address disparities in health and career outcomes. Overall, the lab seeks to develop knowledge on the factors that precipitate disparities in career and health, and the ways in which these disparities can be decreased. Dr. Laura Reid Marks is the director of this lab.

Current Research Projects

The Increasing Mindfulness Engagement (TIME) Project

This study is funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and focused on developing engagement strategies drawn from behavioral economics to engage Black college students who consume alcohol in a mHealth mindfulness app. We will eventually conduct a pilot micro-randomized trial to test these developed engagement strategies.

A Qualitative Analysis of Social Behavioral Processes Associated with Self-Change in Drinking in an Existing Cohort of Black and White Emerging Adults (BETA-I)

This study is funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and will involve interviewing Black emerging adults who had stable, increasing, and decreasing alcohol use over a 3-year period.
